Sweaty feet in Summer: how the Tabi design tackles the heat WELL!

abstract image of orange, red and yellow hues representing a heatwave

When it get's unbearably hot, or for some of us, hot enough, sweaty feet is one of those small (or big!) embarrassing problems most of us deal with quietly.

The hot bus journey. The damp socks by lunchtime. The sandal that suddenly feels like it’s sliding around. The moment you slip your shoes off at someone’s house and quietly hope no one notices..

If your feet sweat more in summer, you’re absolutely not alone!  The average pair of feet has over 250,000 sweat glands. In hot weather, those glands work harder, your shoes trap the moisture, and a cycle of sweat, friction, and odour starts. It's genuinely hard to break, we understand!

But there’s a small change that helps far more than people expect.

Specifically, the design of the sock you’re wearing. The Japanese tabi sock — the one with the split between the big toe and the rest of the foot — is built in a way that tackles summer foot sweat at the source.

Here’s how it works, and which tabis to reach for when the temperature climbs!

Why do feet sweat more in summer?

The science is easy to understand. Your feet have a remarkable density of sweat glands — more per square inch than almost anywhere else on the body. Their main job is to keep you cool through evaporation.

The problem in summer is that the evaporation part stops working properly. Your shoes trap the moisture in. Heat builds. The skin between your toes stays warm and damp, and that’s where the issues start.

A few things make it worse:

·       Closed shoes, especially synthetic-lined ones, hold heat in

·       UK summer humidity slows evaporation even when shoes are open

·       Long periods of standing keep your feet pressed against the same surfaces

·       Heat and stress both trigger the sympathetic nervous system, which controls sweat

The result is the familiar summer trio: damp socks, slippery sandals, and the kind of foot odour you can smell the moment you take your shoes off.

Why conventional socks make sweaty feet worse

Most conventional socks weren’t designed with hot weather or sweaty feet in mind. They were designed to fit a foot snugly and keep it warm. Brilliant in October. Less brilliant in July.

Here’s where standard socks tend to fall short in summer:

1. They press the toes together.
Skin against skin against fabric, with no air movement. That’s exactly the environment bacteria love.

2. They absorb but don’t release.
Thick cotton soaks up sweat — and then holds it pressed against your skin for the rest of the day.

3. They tend to be tight around the cuff.
Restricted circulation means warmer feet, which means more sweat.

4. Cheap synthetic blends can trap moisture badly.
Most low-cost polyester socks have no real moisture-wicking ability — they just hold the sweat against the skin.

It’s not socks themselves that are the problem. It’s that most of what’s in your drawer was designed for an entirely different season.

How the tabi sock design tackles foot sweat

The tabi sock is the oldest sock design in Japanese textile history. The people who first made it weren’t thinking about hot summers in the UK. But they happened to invent something that works brilliantly in heat.

The split between the big toe and the rest of the foot does something genuinely important in summer: it lets air move between the toes.

That sounds small. It isn’t.

The space between your toes is where most foot sweat builds up, where most foot odour starts, and where most bacterial and fungal issues take hold. Letting air move freely through that space changes the whole equation.

Three specific benefits:

1. Less moisture build-up.
The split-toe shape lets sweat evaporate where it would otherwise sit trapped against the skin.

2. Less inter-toe friction.
Conventional socks compress your toes together, and friction itself encourages sweating. Tabis let your toes sit naturally apart.

3. Less odour.
Foot odour is the result of bacteria feeding on sweat. Less sweat plus more air means less bacterial activity — which means less smell.

It’s an over-thousand-year-old design solution to a very modern summer problem!

The best tabi socks for sweaty feet in summer

Not all tabis are built equal in heat. Some are made for winter (our wool blends).

The pairs to reach for in summer are the lightweight, breathable, low-profile ones.

Two of our newest launches are particularly built for hot weather:

Our no-show ankle tabi socks.

Brand new this week. They’re cut low enough to disappear inside any sandal, ballet flat or low-cut shoe. You get all the moisture-wicking and odour-reducing benefits of the tabi design, without any visible sock at all. The cleanest possible answer to wanting your feet to feel as if you’ve gone sockless — but actually be protected.

Our invisible seamless tabi socks.

Equally low-profile, but with a seamless toe construction. Less rubbing, no visible seam line, and a smoother fit inside lighter summer shoes. Perfect for trainers, Mary Janes, and anything where seams might rub or show.

For days when you want the sock to be part of the outfit — the Birkenstock and Teva crowd — our lightweight cotton-blend crew length Tabi socks in white or printed designs give you full air-flow benefits while still finishing the look.

And for the longest-lasting odour resistance, our hemp tabi range (recently launched, limited stock) is genuinely brilliant. Hemp is naturally moisture-wicking and helps reduce bacterial growth — exactly what you want in 32°C.

Which Tabi for which kind of summer day

A quick scenario guide for when the heatwave really sets in.

With sandals (Birks, Tevas, slides, leather slides).
No-show ankle tabis if you want them invisible, or a printed crew if you want the sock to be part of the outfit. Both let air move where it needs to.

With ballet flats, mules and Mary Janes.
Invisible seamless tabis, every time. They sit smoothly under the curve of the shoe and don’t show.

With trainers on a hot day.
Either no-show ankle or invisible seamless. Both let your feet breathe much better than a conventional cotton sock would. My preference is the ankle as I prefer to feel more of the sock than all the different textures of my inner trainer.

With closed work shoes or boots.
Our lightweight cotton-nylon blend crew length pairs handle long days in stuffy work footwear better than thick conventional socks. They wick moisture and dry quickly between wears.

With kimono, yukata or any traditional Japanese summer wear.
White tabi, always. That’s exactly what the tradition calls for, and they’re naturally breathable too.

Practical tips beyond socks for sweaty feet

The sock change is the biggest single thing you can do. A few small habits genuinely help on top.

·       Rotate your shoes. Wearing the same pair every day means they never fully dry out between wears. Two or three pairs alternated through a week makes a real difference.

·       Air your shoes overnight. Leave them open in a well-ventilated spot rather than in a wardrobe. A bit of sunlight helps even more if you can manage it.

·       Try a foot antiperspirant. Yes, it exists. Roll-ons designed specifically for feet (brands like Carpe, Perspirex Foot, or Driclor) work in the same way as underarm antiperspirants and can dramatically reduce sweat production.

·       Wash your feet properly — morning and evening. A gentle scrub with antibacterial soap targets the bacteria that cause odour, not just the sweat.

·       A light dusting of foot powder during the day absorbs moisture and helps with the smell.

·       Change socks at midday on the hottest days. Pack a fresh pair in your bag. A small ritual, but a transformative one!

When sweaty feet are more than just a summer thing

For most of us, sweaty feet are a seasonal annoyance. For some, they’re a year-round condition called hyperhidrosis — excessive sweating that isn’t fully explained by temperature. It happens to the best of us!

If your feet sweat heavily even when it’s cold, or you find yourself going through several pairs of socks a day, it’s worth speaking to your GP. Hyperhidrosis is genuinely treatable, and there are prescription antiperspirants, iontophoresis (a low-current treatment), and even Botox injections that help.

Even with a hyperhidrosis diagnosis, the split-toe sock design still helps with inter-toe moisture and odour. It’s not a substitute for medical treatment, but it makes the day-to-day more manageable.

Sweaty feet in summer: a few questions I get asked

Why do my feet sweat so much in summer?
Hot weather makes your sweat glands work harder, and shoes trap the moisture. Closed footwear, humid days, and synthetic linings all make the problem worse.

Are tabi socks really better for sweaty feet?
Yes. The split-toe design lets air move between the toes, which is exactly where most foot sweat and odour begin.

Should I go sockless in sandals when it’s hot?
I’d argue not. Bare feet in sandals actually sweat more because there’s more skin friction and less moisture wicking. A no-show tabi gives you the visual of being sockless with far less sweat and odour. But..... we get it if it's for the looks, your outfit, and what you're used to, sometimes it's just easier especially with flip flops on the beach!

What material is best for hot weather?
Breathable blends. Lightweight cotton with a touch of nylon and elastane handles heat well. Hemp is exceptional (coming soon!). Heavy wool, thick cotton, and pure polyester are best saved for cooler months.

How often should I change socks in summer?
Once a day at minimum. On heatwave days, a midday change is genuinely worth it.

Do tabi socks help with foot odour?
Yes. Foot odour comes from bacteria feeding on sweat. Less moisture and more air flow means fewer bacteria — and therefore less smell.

Will going sockless ruin my shoes?
Eventually, yes. Bare feet release sweat directly into the lining, where it stays. Even a no-show tabi protects the shoe and extends its life.

Sweaty feet aren’t a problem you have to live with

Summer sweaty feet isn’t a problem you have to live with, even in a heatwave. A small change in the sock you’re wearing — from a conventional one to a tabi — does more than most people expect.

And if you want the most invisible, lowest-profile, summer-built version of that change, our new no-show ankle and invisible seamless tabis are exactly that.
